December 2000: Rupert Nock Middle School students share their thoughts about the storm drain stenciling project:
"The stenciling project was a great idea. Now hopefully some people will never dump waste and then the Merrimack will finally be somewhat clean. Not only was it for others, we learned stuff too and it was really fun. Its really good to do year after year so people will get it and they'll probably enjoy it too."
I thought it was a great idea because we are helping out our city as well as all the animals in the water from the Merrimack. I also thought it educated our team but also our city because we passed out flyers."
I thought the storm drain project was very fun. I liked walking around doing it. I learned that you shouldn't dump things into the storm drains because it all gets drained to the Merrimack River where it will pollute the water. Any kind of pollution can do harm to the water. I would like the river to stay clean, if not cleaner for a long time."
I think it was kind of fun but you should wear old pants and shirts because it gets messy after awhile."
I learned all about polluting and how that all the waste that we dump into storm drains goes straight to the river. Pollution will kill fish, sea animals and lots more."
"The stenciling project was okay, it wasn't really that fun unless you were painting and sometimes people would have two turns and others only one. Its a good activity because you're helping the river and fish and notifying people to stop dumping waste like: pet waste, yard waste, antifreeze, oil, or paint. Overall it was an okay project."
"It was fun and good for the environment because it tells people not to dump things into the storm drains because it goes to the Merrimack River and will pollute it."
