About the Green Mountain Audubon Society

The Green Mountain Audubon Society was founded in 1962 as an independent Vermont corporation and became a chapter of the National Audubon Society to promote environmental education, wildlife protection and land conservation.

The National Audubon Society, named in memory of naturalist and painter John J. Audubon (1785-1851), was established in 1905 to protect American birds.

The original Nature Center — house, barn and 150-acre farm — were the extraordinary gift of Christine Hires in 1964. Over the years, this legacy has grown to include 255 acres supported by more than 1000 members throughout northwestern Vermont. The Green Mountain Audubon Center is now leased and operated by Audubon Vermont.

The Christmas Bird Count is linked to Audubon groups throughout the country and helps researchers assess the population size and health of many bird species nationwide.
