Spring Bonanza of Birds

Bridget will give a colorful power point presentation about the birds found in the forests across Vermont.  Find out why Vermont is globally important to various species of neotropical migrants, including warblers, thrushes, flycatchers, and boreal birds.  Test your identification skills and fine-tune your birding ear with an indoor warm-up to prepare you for spring.  Bridget will discuss techniques for maximizing your observation skills with quick looks at birds, as well as introducing mnemonics to help remember bird song.

Alien Invaders

  • Speaker:  Mike Winslow, staff scientist for the Lake Champlain Committee, will tell us about the invasive species of Lake Champlain.  Where did they come from?  How did they get here?  How long have they been here?  What can we do about them?  And which invaders are next?

Birding by Ear

  • Location:  Dorothy Alling Library, Williston

  • Speaker:  Allan Strong, Assistant Professor in UVM’s Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources.  Allan’s presentation will cover some of the tricks of the trade used to identify birds by sound:  grouping birds by song type, letting habitat be your guide, understanding variability, as well as some of the new resources that are available to birders, such as the iPod and sound editing programs.  This talk will be followed by a field trip on June 9 at Catamount Family Center.
